Transferring Data to HEC-RAS (Back to Top)

Many water resource problems require both a hydrology and a hydraulics model.  The HEC-HMS program is designed to work with the HEC-RAS program for solving these types of problems.  All simulation results computed by HEC-HMS are stored in the project DSS file; more information is available in the User's Manual on organization conventions for the data.  The data itself is stored in so-called double precision.  A new version of HEC-RAS currently under development will use double precision.  However, old versions of both programs used a lower precision for computed results.  The current and older versions of HEC-RAS will not be able to use results from a new version of HEC-HMS.  The accompanying table shows which program versions are directly compatible.  You may still use results from a new version of HEC-HMS with an old version of HEC-RAS if you convert the double precision data.  The conversion can be performed using HEC-DSSVue with a special plug-in (download here).  Install the plug-in and use it to convert HEC-HMS results for use in old versions of HEC-RAS.

Special Characters in Directories and File Names (Back to Top)

Some languages include diacritic marks that modify letters.  Examples include the umlaut (¨) from German, the grave (`) from Portuguese, or the circumflex (ˆ) from Italian.  There are many types of diacritic marks and many are used in more than one language.  The Microsoft Windows operating system allows letters with diacritic marks to be used in directory and file names.  The HEC-HMS program currently is not able to process directory or file names that include letters with diacritic marks.  No directory or file name should use diacritic marks.  The program may not be able to process the files if diacritic marks are used.

Decimal Separator (Back to Top)

Most countries use either a period (.) or a comma (,) as the decimal separator in numbers; each country has adopted a standard for which one is preferred.  The program allows you to select which decimal seperator to use regardless of any setting in the operating system.  In some countries, there will be problems when the program interacts with the clipboard of the operating system.
