Scenario

Variants are variations on in the input time series and global variables for a ResSim alternative.  They are used for model linking with CWMS and HEC-WAT and represented by tabs in the Alternative editor:

These instructions assume the following:

  • You want to remove some or all variants associated with an Alternative.

Warning - BACKUP your watershed

warning Before making any changes to the watershed Zip up a backup copy!!

Steps

For each alternative for which you want to remove variants, do the following:

1. Identify which (if any) variants you would like to keep for your alternative

Open the Alternative Editor.

Select the offending alternative and select the Time-Series tab to see the assortment of variants. Also note the associated Network for that alternative.

The subtab labeled "ResSim-Default" represents the original ResSim standalone alternative information. Each additional subtab is a variant.  ResSim labeled these variants after the partner program (WAT), "-", and the program order, however the naming of variants may have changed over time, so depending on the age of your model, you may have different variant naming.  "ResSim-Default" should always be representative of your ResSim standalone alternative (in this example "2015MJ").

2. Close ResSim and any associated programs such as HEC-RTS or HEC-WAT.

3. Delete Files Associated with Each Offending Variant

Navigate to the watershed location in your (File Explorer or equivalent).

Go to the rss directory and sort by file type.

Delete the *.fits files associates with each offending variant.

For example, if we do not like the "WAT-Ressim-FRA" alternative variant, we would delete:

  • WAT-ResSim-FRA.fits
  • WAT-ResSim-FRAObs.fits

warning Do NOT delete these files, which are associated with the ResSim default.

  • <altname>.fits
  • <altname>Obs.fits

Next, if you have Global Variables, you will need to get rid of the files related to Global Variables variant information. Delete the variant *.igv files.

For example, if we do not like the "WAT-Ressim-FRA" alternative variant, we would delete:

  • WAT-ResSim-FRA.igv

warning Do NOT delete the igv files associated with the default ResSim alternative.

  • <altname>.igv

4. Update the ralt file references to the variants you just deleted.

Edit the ralt file associated with the Alternative's Network

  • <networkname>.ralt

For example, if we do not like the "WAT-Ressim-FRA" alternative variant (or any other variants of the 2015MJ alternative), we would look for ralt associated with the network file "Trinity_CWMS_Extended".  (Note that an alternative's network is identified in the top panel of the Alternative Editor.)

  • Trinity_CWMS_Extended.ralt

Search for "InputTsVariant"

Delete the lines associated with your unwanted variants (identified by the variant name, e.g., WAT-Ressim-FRA).

Save file.

5. Open your watershed and confirm that the unwanted variants are no longer showing up, and there are no error or warning messages in the console log.
