Once you've created a forecast, reviewed the extract process, and verified that model linking is correct, you're ready to compute the forecast. HEC-RTS supports computing either a single forecast run or multiple runs, depending on your configuration.

This guide will teach you how to compute a forecast in HEC-RTS, including how to initiate a compute, force a recompute, and use advanced options to optimize the forecasting process.

Computing a Single Forecast Run

To compute an individual forecast run:

  1. Highlight the desired forecast run.
  2. Go to the Actions tab and click Compute

Alternatively, you can right-click the forecast run name and select Compute from the shortcut menu.

The Compute Progress dialog will appear, and the selected forecast run will begin computing.

Computing Multiple Forecast Runs

If your forecast includes multiple forecast runs, you can compute them simultaneously.

  1. From the Forecast menu, select Compute Manager.
  2. In the Compute Manager dialog, select the forecast runs you want to compute.
  3. Click Compute.

Recomputing Forecast Runs

HEC-RTS tracks which model runs were executed during a computation. If a model in the forecast sequence has been modified, HEC-RTS will recompute that model when the forecast is re-run. If no changes were made, previously computed models will be skipped (not recomputed).

To force a full recompute of a forecast run:

  1. Go to the Actions tab.
  2. Check the box labeled Force Recompute.
  3. Click Compute to re-compute the entire model sequence.

Advanced Compute Options

There are several advanced options that you can use when computing forecasts to help improve efficiency and streamline the process.

Skip Compute

The Skip Compute option allows you to exclude a selected model alternative from the computation process.

To enable:

  1. Right-click the model alternative you want to skip.
  2. Select Skip Compute for ... from the context menu.
  3. A blue down arrow will appear over the model icon in the window, indicating the model alternative will be skipped during the execution of the forecast.

Compute Through

The Compute Through option allows you to run a computation up to a selected model alternative, after which all remaining alternatives will be skipped.

To enable:

  1. Right-click the model alternative you want to skip.
  2. Select Compute Through for ... from the context menu.
  3. A red up arrow will appear over the model icon in the window, indicating the model alternative will be the last computed during the execution of the forecast.
