To open a non-dockable Properties Window, it is usually more convenient to always have to properties window open (Window->Properties from the main menu). It is context sensitive and will automatically display all the properties associated with a Map Window, right click on the Map Window node and select 'Properties…'. Discussion of each of the properties is included in the Project Settings->Properties section.
