The 'Define Polygon' tool is used to form a polygon. This polygon is used for a variety of editing purposes as described below. In addition, once a polygon is defined on a map window, it can be used in I/O operations to set the extents of TIN data to read, write, or project.

To create a polygon, either press and hold the left mouse button while moving the mouse on the Map Window, press and release the left mouse button to input individual points, or use a combination of both techniques. To remove one or more points, use the backspace key. To remove all the points, use the escape key. Once satisfied with the polygon, press the right mouse key. This will automatically connect the first and last polygon points and redraw the polygon using a thicker line. The polygon can be removed by pressing the escape key. If a new polygon is created once the original polygon is completed, the original polygon will remain in the map view but the program will not use it. Only the most recent polygon is tracked in the map window.

A defined polygon has multiple uses. See Defined Polygon Basin Averages, Creating Shapefiles, Deleting a Group of Points, Adjusting Measurement Values for a Group of Points.
