The Map Scale provides a reference for the spatial distance covered by the Map Window. An example of the Map Scale is shown below:

The Map Scale sizes based on the zoom level, constantly updating as the user zooms in/out. The units of the scale are dependent on the Units System specification in the Global Settings. If the Units System is English, the Map Scale units will be feet or miles. If the Units System is metric, the Map Scale units will be meters or kilometers. One caveat is when displaying data in the Geographic coordinate system. In that case, the Map Scale will be in degrees.


When zooming in/out, HEC-MetVue will select the appropriate unit increment and size the scale bar to appropriately represent that increment. Depending on the display units, the Map Scale will select one of the following increments:

Degrees:

.001, .01, .05, 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 45, 60, 90

English:

Feet: 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000

Miles: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500

Metric:

Meters: 0.1, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500

Kilometer: 1, 2, 5, 10, 50, 100, 1000
