Overview

HEC-MetVue (Meteorological Visualization Utility Engine) is the primary tool used in CWMS for processing gridded meteorological data. It merges observed and forecast datasets into a single, unified input for use in HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS models.

HEC-MetVue offers a range of user-friendly features, including:

  • Automated processing of observed and forecast input datasets (including filling in missing data)
  • Generating combined output datasets with consistent time intervals and spatial coverage
  • Visualizing basin-average statistics and dataset animations
  • Applying value adjustments and spatial shifts to support sensitivity analyses and “what-if” scenarios

Fix Bugs and Perform Maintenance

The team will evaluate and address bug reports and document issues that cannot be fixed in a specific release cycle. With new HEC-MetVue features coming out in CWMS 3.5 and CWMS 3.6, maintenance is also dedicated to quickly react to and address new issues (including bugs and minor improvements) as more diverse usage occurs across the water management offices.

Support Field Operations

The team will provide CWMS user support in a variety of HEC-MetVue areas including setup, troubleshooting, implementation, and execution of models.  Support is provided through the HEC Discourse, Microsoft Teams, and direct contact by phone or email.

Support Monthly Working Sessions

Monthly working sessions are hosted on Microsoft Teams, providing HEC-MetVue modelers with access to expert support. The team will continue to participate in these sessions, as they have been highly valuable to users. These meetings are an effective platform for delivering regularly scheduled field support, answering questions, and demonstrating key software features.

Develop New Tutorials

The team will develop tutorials on key new features, in particular color scale setup and application, as well as zones creation and zonal editing.

Validate and Test Software

The team will test new HEC-MetVue 3.5 features for CWMS 3.6 and HEC-MetVue 3.6 for CWMS 3.7 to ensure proper compatibility within HEC-RTS. The team will also continue to increase the automated testing coverage for HEC-MetVue.

Manage FY25 Contracts

The team will review and validate contractor deliverables slated for HEC-MetVue 3.5/3.6 (CWMS 3.6), including:

  • RTS-MetInterp Integration
    • The MetVue Alternative will allow for using MetInterp in HEC-RTS.  This will provide an option for watersheds that can get better estimates of observed (precipitation and temperature) data from gage station measurements instead of radar weather model output. The MetInterp tool will also provide an option for creating interpolated forecast precipitation grids from point QPF measurements.
  • Animation Video Generation Tool
    • The tool will support the recording and export of animation videos to aid in reporting and briefings.
  • Performance Improvements, in particular the implementation of caching and better memory management to avoid unnecessary or repetitive computations, within the following components:
    • Zonal Editor
    • Time-Based Editing
    • Basin Average Computation
  • Basin Average Layer Scaling/Readability Improvements
    • The improvements will target aggregation and more readable rendering of basin polygons and statistic when labels overlap at zoomed out levels.
