Task 1. Create and save a 2-D pie chart of reservoir outflows, recorded for January 1, 2008.

  1. Close the Script Editor, Script Selector, and any plots that are open.
  2. Open the ScriptingWorkshop.dss file from the workshop directory.
  3. Select View->Pathname Parts from the menu.
  4. Filter the catalog by selecting FLOW-RES OUT for the C-Part and 01JAN2008 for the D-part.
  5. Select all of the displayed pathnames by selecting Edit->Select All from the menu or by pressing Ctrl+A.
  6. Select Display->Charts->Pie Chart from the menu. The pie chart window will open.
  7. Set the Sort Type option to By Value and the Sort Order option to Descending.



    Question 1. How many reservoirs display an outflow of less than 10 cfs?

  8. Save the chart as "PieChart1.png":
    1. Select File->Save As… from the menu.
    2. Select the workshop directory.
    3. Type PieChart1 in the File name: field.
    4. Set the Files of type: field to *.png.
    5. Click Save to save the figure.

Task 2. Modify the Previous Chart to Exclude Low Flows and Modify the Chart Properties.

  1. Close the pie chart if it is still open
  2. Clear the current HEC-DSSVue selections by clicking Clear Selections.
  3. Further filter the catalog by selecting GT10 for the F-part. These records have outflow > 10cfs.
  4. Select all the displayed pathnames and create a new pie chart as in Task #1.
  5. Select 3D from the "Dimension" options.
  6. Sort by value, in ascending order.
  7. Turn off the Legend, and turn on all the section labels.
  8. Adjust the transparency to approximately 50%.
  9. Switch the colors of Isabella and Black Butte.
    1. Click "Change Section Colors".
    2. Select Black Butte, and change the color to light blue.
    3. Select Isabella, and change the color to red
  10. Format the chart:
    1. Right-click on the pie chart, and select Properties…
    2. Change the title to "Reservoir Outflows, January 1, 2008".
    3. Change the font to 28-point, Times New Roman.
    4. Click the Plot tab, and set the outline and background colors to white.
    5. Click OK.
  11. Use the method above to save the chart as "PieChart2.png" in the workshop directory.
  12. View the .png files in Photos, Paint, or some other application.
