The Communities interface offers a table for entering the name, level, size variable, size units, and description (Figure).

Figure.  Communities are entered and initially characterized in the Communities interface.

Name is simply the name of the community.  Level serves as an ordering mechanism for simulations, with simulations proceeding from lowest to highest order, and as an ecological aggregation for output such that variables like areas and counts of individuals can be reported per level.  The size variable and size units are the primary system of measure for tracking simulated communities.  The combination of size variable and size units is also called the “community units” for the associated community.  Description is a simple text field that can be used to store notes about the community.
