This section describes the physical theory of the hydraulics model: the governing equations for two-dimensional depth-averaged flow, the simplified diffusion-wave form, and the physical closures for bottom friction and turbulent mixing. The equations are presented here in continuous (differential) form; their discretization is described in the Numerical Methods section.
