A forecast run is a predefined sequence of model alternatives executed in a specific order during a forecast. To create a forecast run, you select a preset program order and assign model alternatives to the required positions. Before creating one, you must define model alternatives and assign them model keys. For additional information on model alternatives, refer to this set of guides.
This guide will show you how to manage forecast runs in your HEC-RTS watershed.
Accessing the Forecast Run Editor Dialog
Manage forecast runs using the Forecast Run Editor dialog.
To access the dialog:
- Launch HEC-RTS and open your watershed.
- Go to the Setup tab.
- From the Models menu, choose Forecast Runs to open the dialog.

Creating a New Forecast Run
To create a new forecast run:
- In the Forecast Run Editor dialog, click New Run and the lower part of the dialog will become editable.

- Enter a name in the Name field (required). Optionally, add a Description.
- Choose a Program Order from the dropdown. This defines which software applications will appear in the Models tab.
- Note: Program orders cannot be modified here. See the guide on Creating and Managing Program Orders for more details.
- For each software application listed, select a corresponding model alternative.
- Note: You don't have to assign alternatives to every application; some can be left blank depending on the forecast run.
- HEC-RTS will generate the run key based on your selections.
- Click Apply to save and add the new forecast run to the list.
- Repeat as needed for additional forecast runs.
- Click OK to close the dialog.
- Save your watershed.
Editing an Existing Forecast Run
Editing an existing forecast run is not recommended, as it may lead to issues with model linking. If changes are necessary, it is best to create a new forecast run and verify that model linking is functioning correctly before using it.
Deleting an Existing Forecast Run
To delete an existing forecast run:
- In the Forecast Run Editor dialog, select a forecast run from the list.
- Click Delete Run.
- Confirm by clicking Yes.
- Click Apply, then OK to close the dialog.
- Save your watershed.
