Overview

This tutorial demonstrates how to add observed data to your Operational Support Interface (OSI) graphically and tabularly. Adding Observed Data to the OSI is a new feature in HEC-ResSim v4.1.

For this demonstration, you will be working with the Russian River watershed from the CWMS Prospect Workshop. The model can be downloaded here.

Tasks

The tasks for this tutorial are:

  1. Adding Observed Data Graphically
  2. Adding Observed Data Tabularly

Adding Observed Data Graphically

This task guides you through adding observed data as additional time series to an existing variable in the OSI. Doing so, observed data will appear in your plot area for the selected variable.

  1. Start RTS
  2. Open the Workshop_HEC_RussianRiver watershed
  3. Switch the the Modeling Tab
  4. From the Forecast menu, select "Open"
  5. Open the HEC-ResSim in CWMS Forecast
  6. In the Forecast model tree, select the ResSim Alternative RT-Normal
  7. In the Model Actions Widget, select "Operational Support..."
  8. Select a cell in the column that you would like to add observed data to the plot and then right-click and select Edit Variable...

  9. In the OSI Variable Editor, under the Additional Time Series Displayed in Plot, select the Add button.

  10. In the Independent Variable Definition window, select the dropdown for the the "Operation Support Model Variable is a Function of" and select Observed Data.

If you do not see Observed Data in the dropdown, then Observed Data has not been added to any Network Elements. In order for Observed Data to be selected here, you will need to check the Observed Data boxes on the Reservoir, Junction, Reach, and/or Diversion Editors. And assigned a Time Series in the Alternative Editor.

  11. For "Element Type," you can select Junction, Reservoir, Reach or Diversion. For this exercise, select Reservoir.

  12. For "Element," select Coyote.
  13. For "Observed Data," select Coyote-Pool - Flow-OUT.

  14. Select OK to close the Independent Variable Definition window.
  15. Review the Time Series in the "Additional Time Series Displayed in Plot" window. Observed Data will start with (OBS). This is where you can adjust it's Viewport or it's Line Style.

  16. Once you have reviewed Viewport and Line Style settings. Select OK. Observed Data will now show in the plot area.

Adding Observed Data Tabularly

This task guides you through adding observed data as variable in the OSI. Doing so, observed data will have it's own column in the table as well as being plotted.

  1. Start RTS
  2. Open the Workshop_HEC_RussianRiver watershed
  3. Switch the the Modeling Tab
  4. From the Forecast menu, select "Open"
  5. Open the HEC-ResSim in CWMS Forecast
  6. In the Forecast model tree, select the ResSim Alternative RT-Normal
  7. In the Model Actions Widget, select "Operational Support..."
  8. From the Menu Bar, select Edit - Add Variable.

  9. When the New Operations Support Variable window pops up, provide a name. For this demonstration, I am using "Mendocino Observed"
  10. For the "Element Type," select Reservoir. (The OSI allows you to add Observed Data for Reservoirs, Junctions, Reaches, and Diversions)

  11. For "Element," select Coyote.

  12. For "Type," select Observed Data.

  13. Once Observed Data is selected, and new field will appear: "Observed Data." For this field, select Coyotoe-Pool - Flow-OUT.

  14. Select OK. Mendocino Observed Data will now have a column in the table and an associated plot.
