HEC-MetVue allows for creating shapefiles from polygons drawn on the Map Window, using the Define Polygon Tool (see Creating a Polygon With the Define Polygon Tool). The first image below shows how to access the "Save Polygon To Shapefile" action from the "Ad-Hoc Polygon Operations" menu. The second figure shows the resulting editor for creation of the polygon.

ItemsDescription
1This component allows for typing in the filename. This can either be a new or existing file. If this is an existing file, the polygon will be added to the existing file, and therefore the table will show more entries.
2This button will allow browsing for a shapefile.

Line Simplification Options allow for simplifying drawn polygons. For a given purpose, some tightly clustered points can be considered redundant, and therefore just take up more disk space and memory to load.

Simplifying the polygon reduces disk space required for storing the shapefile, and makes it load faster.

There are 3 options for handling the created map after after clicking OK

  • Do Not Load: saves the map, but does not load it into HEC-MetVue
  • Load as Background Map: Saves the map, then loads it into the current Map Window as a background map.
  • Load as Basin Average Map: Saves the map, then loads it into the current Map Window as a basin average map.
5The DBF file editing table (see DBF File Editor)
6The OK button saves the current settings, and triggers loading of the shapefile based on the Map Loading Options
7Cancels the creation, or editing, of the shapefile.
