To view Hydrologic Sampler flow sampling results, the simulation of interest must either be selected from the Study Tree in the Study Pane or open in the active map window in the Desktop Pane in the HEC-WAT main window. Each active map window displays results for a selected simulation, including some of the results available for the Hydrologic Sampling alternative contained in the selected simulation. The user can select specific event results to view from the Select Event Results dialog.

It is important to note that selecting the event results is required before a Hydrologic Sampler results option can be viewed. The Hydrologic Sampler results are available either from the HEC-WAT main window Results menu, the Study Pane, the Content Pane, or interactively from an active map window schematic.

Select Event Results 

As described in Prerequisites, the step of clicking the Save Model Folder option (from the Run FRA Simulation dialog) during an FRA compute will retain all of the Hydrologic Sampler output files listed in Table 1. The next required step for viewing Hydrologic Sampler results from the HEC-WAT interface is to select a realization, lifecycle and event from the Select Event Results dialog.

Users can access the Select Event Results dialog box from the Study Tree, from the Simulations folder right-click the simulation of interest, point to Results and click Select Results from the simulation shortcut menu. Use the lists to select the Realization, Lifecycle, and Event of interest in the Select Event Results dialog. Then click OK to close the Select Event Results dialog box.

Alternatively, users can open the Select Event Results dialog box from the HEC-WAT main window from the Results menu, click Select Results, and the Select Event Results dialog box will open.

Note

If a Hydrologic Sampler results option is selected (which requires the user to define specific results to view), but the user has not completed the Select Event Results dialog box, then the Select Event Results dialog will open automatically and the user must complete the dialog before the selected results will open.

Results Menu 

From the HEC-WAT main window, the Results menu can be different based on the simulation type (deterministic or FRA simulation), the state of the HEC-WAT interface (simulation selected or not selected), and the state of the simulation (compute completed or event results selected). When an FRA simulation is selected from the Study Tree and computed (or selected in an open map window as described in the Simulation Map Window section), then the Hydrologic Sampler results will be accessible from the Results menu, from the Hydrologic Sampling submenu (for Flow sampling (e.g., Levee_Flow30yrs alternative).

Otherwise, the Results menu will contain only one command, Select Simulation, which opens the Select Simulation Results dialog.

Users can access the Hydrologic Sampler results for an FRA simulation from the Results menu after selecting a simulation:

  1. From the HEC-WAT main window, select the Results menu and click the Select Simulation command. The Select Simulation Results dialog opens.

  2. From the Simulation list, select the FRA simulation of interest. Click OK to close the Select Simulation Results dialog box and the selected simulation will open in a map window in the Desktop Pane. Refer to the Simulation Map Window section for more information on simulation map windows.
  3. Next, from the HEC-WAT main window, select the Results menu and click on Hydrologic Sampling and the submenu opens. Select the Hydrologic Sampler results option of choice from the submenu.

Important

If a simulation map window is open in the Desktop Pane and a different simulation is selected from the Study Tree, the Results menu will only provide the results for the simulation open in the active map window and not for the simulation selected in the Study Tree. In this case, users can access the second simulation's results from the Study Tree in the Study Pane. In other words, it is important to pay close attention to the results being accessed from the Results menu.

Simulation Map Window 

A simulation map window allows users to view results, which includes the results for the Hydrologic Sampling alternative contained in the simulation. Hydrologic Sampler results are available from the Results menu and from the simulation map window. Note, for the Results menu, the active simulation map window overrides simulations selected in the Study Tree.

Open a Simulation Map Window 

Additional ways to open a simulation in a map window in the Desktop Pane includes:

  1. From the HEC-WAT main window, from the Study Tree, double-click on a simulation of interest to open the simulation in a map window in the Desktop Pane (e.g., DSMS_3-Shorter).
  2. Alternatively, from the HEC-WAT main window, from the Study Tree, right-click on the simulation of interest (e.g., DSMS-FWAC1) and the shortcut menu opens.   3. To open a different simulation in a new map window, follow either Step 1 or Step 2 and prior to the simulation opening in a map window, a Select Map dialog box opens. In the Select Map dialog box, click the radio button to select the New Map Window option. Click OK and the simulation opens in the Desktop Pane on top of the DSMS_3-Shorter map window.

  4. Alternatively, from the Select Map dialog, click the radio button to select the DSMS_3-Shorter Map Window option, and click OK to open the selected simulation in the Desktop Pane in the currently open simulation map window.

Note

If a simulation map window is open in the Desktop Pane and a different simulation is selected from the Study Tree, then the Results menu will provide results for the simulation in the active map window. The Results menu is linked to the active map window (DSMS-FCWAC1) and not the simulation selected in the Study Tree (DSMS_3-Shorter); therefore, care must be taken when accessing the Hydrologic Sampler results from the Results menu.

Simulation Map Window Results

View location-specific Hydrologic Sampler results from the active simulation map window:

  1. From the Desktop Pane, from the active simulation map window, click the Select Tool from the Study Element Tools. For further details on the Study Element Tools, refer to the HEC-WAT User's Manual (available here: HEC-WAT Documentation).
  2. With the Select Tool active, hover over a model element to view the tooltip (light-yellow box) for the element (e.g., Charleston Lock 6).

  3. If the tooltip indicates that Hydrologic Sampler results are available at an element, right-click on the element, point to the Hydrologic Sampling option and the shortcut submenu opens. Select an item from the Hydrologic Sampling list.

    Note

    Only location-specific results are relevant for individual locations, and consequently available in the simulation map window shortcut menu: plot hydrograph and plot maximum flows.

  4. If the realization, lifecycle, and event results have not been selected before the Hydrologic Sampler results option is selected from the Hydrologic Sampling submenu, the Select Event Results dialog box opens. Use the lists to select the Realization, Lifecycle, and Event of interest in the Select Event Results dialog box. Click OK to close the Select Event Results dialog box and the selected results plot opens.

Study Pane 

View the Hydrologic Sampler results from the Study Pane, from the HEC-WAT main window, from the Study Tree in the Study Pane, expand an Alternatives folder, and expand a Simulations folder for a simulation of interest. In the Simulations folder, right-click on the simulation of interest (e.g., DSMS_3-Shorter) and the shortcut menu opens. In the shortcut menu, point to Results, from the Results submenu point to Hydrologic Sampling, and the Hydrologic Sampling results submenu opens. Select the Hydrologic Sampler results option of choice from the Hydrologic Sampling submenu.

Note

Opening the Hydrologic Sampler results from the Study Pane allows users to access and view Hydrologic Sampler results for FRA simulations (and for alternatives) that are not currently displayed in an active map window in the Desktop Pane.

Content Pane 

View the Hydrologic Sampler results from the Content Pane:

  1. From the HEC-WAT main window, from the Study Tree in the Study Pane, expand an Alternatives folder (e.g., DSMS_3), and expand a Simulations folder. In the Simulations folder, select the simulation of interest (e.g., DSMS_3-Shorter) and the Content Pane updates with the content for the selected simulation.
  2. In the Content Pane, right-click on the Hydrologic Sampling alternative name (e.g., Levee_Flow30yrs) and the shortcut menu opens. From the shortcut menu, point to Results and select the desired Hydrologic Sampler results option.
  3. As with the Study Pane, Hydrologic Sampler results opened from the Content Pane allow users to view results without first opening a map window.
