Task C.1 – Mass Processing of Subbasins
Using the "Save/Create Time Series", one can quickly calculate time series values for active polygon shapefiles.
This task will demonstrate creating time series for subbasins in the active mapping files.
Check the Active Mapping Files.
- Open the "MBRFC Precip 1HR" Map Window.
- In the Project Explorer, right click on the "active mapping files" node of the "MBRFC Precip 1HR" Map Window and choose "Select Maps."
- Confirm that the Basin Average option has a check mark for the "Sioux_James_HUC8s.shp"

- The "Save/Create Time Series" will only process basin averages for shapefiles that are checked in the Select Maps dialog.
- Select "Ok" to close the Select Maps window.
- The checked basin average mapping files will display a green shaded polygon in front of their name in the Project Explorer.

- Click on the "MBRFC Precip 1HR" Map Window and go to the Properties.
- Check if the "Polygon Avg Method for Grids" is set to "Use Work Session Setting."
- Then check the Properties of the "Session Defaults" to see if the "Polygon Avg Method for Grids" is set to "Use Project Default Setting."
- Then check the Properties of the "Project Defaults" to see if the "Polygon Avg Method for Grids" is set to "Grid Cell Avg."
Notice that Grid Cell Avg or TIN Surface can be selected for the polygon average method. HEC-MetVue's default is to use Grid Cell Avg. In most circumstances, these two methods will produce similar time series results. However, there are cases when the area being analyzed could be sensitive to the polygon average method. The grid data and subbasin size should be considered when changing the polygon average method.
Creating Subbasin Time Series.
- Click in the "MBRFC Precip 1HR" Map Window.
- Select the "Save/Create Time Series"
icon on the tool bar or choose the option from the "File" menu. - Check that the Time Series Interval is set to 1 and Hours.
- Check that the Data Type is set PER-CUM.
- Check the Write to HEC-DSS and the Write to Basin Average Panel options.
- Save the basin averages to a HEC-DSS file called "Sioux_James_HUC8_Precip_Basin_Avg.dss" in the "Output" folder.
- Select the Compute Entire Timespan and Basin Polygon for the Basin Average Computation Method.
- For the HEC-DSS path check Override A: to use "Sioux James HUC8", select the "NAME: attribute from the B: drop down, type in "Precip" for the C part, and check Override F: to type in "MBRFC Stage IV."

- Select "OK" and HEC-MetVue will begin calculating the time series precipitation for the subbasins.

HEC-MetVue will compute time series for all the subbasins of the active mapping files that have been checked for basin averaging. If there are multiple active mapping files that have the checked basin average then HEC-MetVue will calculate the basin averages for all those mapping files and place the time series in the same HEC-DSS file.
- The time series will be written to the HEC-DSS file and the Basin Average Panel of the Output Window.

- Open the HEC-DSS file to find and plot the basin average time series.

The computed Time Series using subbasin maps in this task represent areal averages for each subbasin.
- Proceed to the next task to see how point shapefiles can be used to sample times series for point locations.
