The next step is to verify the Cumulus data extract and model linking by creating and verifying the data within a forecast.

Create a New Forecast

From the Modeling module within the CAVI, select Forecast → New...

Name the forecast Model Linking Test, populate the Time Window as shown below and select both the NoQPF and QPF Forecast Runs.

Select OK to create the forecast.

The Cumulus extract will automatically begin as the forecast is created since it is set to run by default. The User may be prompted to sign in to Cumulus by selecting their certificate and entering their PIN.

Detailed progress on the extract download can be followed from the Extract tab within the CAVI window.

The Extract tab will also provide a summary of all of the records retrieved or missing for the forecast after the download is complete.

Verify Cumulus Grid Extraction

Verify the data from the Cumulus extract was all imported into the forecast by selecting the CWMS-Vue icon ()and viewing the forecast.dss file.

Browsing the F-Part dropdown list shows that all of the datatypes from the Cumulus extract have been imported.

Looking closer at the forecast.dss file confirms that all observed precipitation (NCEP-STAGE4), temperature (NDGD-RTMA) and SWE (SNODAS-INTERP) grids were imported for the lookback period (25 Mar - 03 Apr 2024) as well as the forecast precipitation (WPC-QPF-2.5KM) and temperature (MBRFC-KRF-FCT) grids for the forecast period (04 Apr - 09 Apr 2024).

Additional information on gridded data inputs to HEC-MetVue can be found within the MetVue Data Preprocessing tab:

View Gridded Data Within MetVue

Returning to the CAVI window, right-click on the QPF - 70H0 forecast and select Display in Map to view the QPF forecast's data within the active Map Window.

Expand the QPF - 70H0 forecast and QPF MetVue alternative menus.

Notice that each Map Window icon (lightning bolt) indicates the current TIN status:

Icon

TIN Status

Data loaded correctly (no preprocessing needed)

Data was preprocessed (transformation or fill applied)

Data failed to load

Data has user edits

Data has been computed

Waiting for MetVue to load or render data

Hovering over a lightning bolt icon will produce a Tool Tip that defines the lightning bolt symbols.

The lightning bolt color-coding for the QPF - 70H0 alternative indicates that all data for the FcstPrecip, FcstTemp, ObsPrecip and ObsTemp grids loaded (Green Icons) and that the SWE grids were missing a timestep that was successfully filled (Hatched Green Icon).

The Precip (7), Temp (7) and SWE (7) icons are red because they represent the MetVue model output for the QPF alternative that has not been run yet.

Highlight the ObsPrecip dataset within the QPF MetVue alternative.

The Total Observed Precipitation for the forecast time window (25 Mar - 04 Apr 2024) will be displayed within the CAVI window, with the average values by subbasin also included.

If the data does not appear in the map window after highlighting it, try slightly shifting the map window by clicking and dragging the cursor. This will trigger the window to update and the data should then appear.

Click on the other map windows to view and verify the gridded datasets.
