The HEC-WAT main window has four main panes: the Study Pane, the Content Pane, the Desktop Pane, and the Message Pane. The following sections describe the purpose of each pane.

Study Pane

The Study Pane provides an overview of components that have been defined for an HEC-WAT study. Based on the selected tab in the Tabs control, the Study Pane displays the study tree which provides access to the information about alternatives, simulations, analysis periods, or models that have been defined through the Study tab; the active map windows through the Maps tab; or the stream alignments, measures, common computation points, and impact areas through the Schematic tab. The Study Pane (displayed by selecting the Study tab) for an HEC-WAT study (e.g., RussianRiver) displays the components that have been defined in a Study Tree.

Action Tools

The Study Pane contains a toolbar of Action Tools located at the bottom of the Study Pane. Below is an example of the action tools for a simulation:

Simulation Action Tools

The Action Tools allow the user to create, edit, display in a map window, delete, and compute an item that has been selected in the Study Tree. Depending on the type of component selected in the Study Pane, a different selection of action tools will be available. For example, when a simulation has been selected (e.g., Base_POR_Full), the available action tools are displayed as buttons located at the bottom of the pane: edit, display in map window, delete, and compute the simulation.

Content Pane

The Content pane provides details for the currently selected component in the Study Pane. With the Study tab active, the Content Pane displays the layers associated with the selected study component; with the Maps tab active, the Content Pane displays the layers associated with the selected map window; and with the Schematic tab active, the Content Pane displays information about the selected schematic element.

For example when an HEC-WAT simulation has been selected (e.g., Without Project Conditions-RR_Feb_1986), the Content Pane displays the elements of the simulation. In this case the information includes the simulation's alternative, analysis period, program order, selected model alternatives, that were run, time window, output directory, and information regarding the results of the simulation relative to any user edits of any component.

Desktop Pane

The Desktop Pane hosts two different types of map windows for an HEC-WAT study: a schematic (e.g., Without Project Conditions) and a simulation (e.g., Without Project Conditions-RR_Feb1986). These two types of map windows can either be viewed individually or simultaneously side-by-side. Note that the map window tools along the left side of each map window are different depending on the map window type (i.e., schematic or simulation).

Message Pane

The Message Pane contains messages from HEC-WAT or associated plugins regarding information about actions or computation progress. Examples of messages presented in the Message Pane include the opening of a study, opening map windows, accessing DSS, and many other plugin-specific activities.
