Software Version

HEC-WAT Version 1.1.0 was used to create this example. You can open the example WAT study with HEC-WAT Version 1.1.0 or a newer version.  RAS version 6.1.0 is expected to be installed.

Purpose

This part of the workshop starts with opening an existing WAT watershed and performing some basic verification steps.

Ensure All Models Run in Base WAT Directory

Typically, the first step in verifying a WAT watershed is ready to be run is to run each model in the base directory of WAT with their native application. That shows each of the models should be set up to run (at least run in the version they were running in). Depending on how the models were set up, this task can be very simple or complex. Common issues include changes in software versions that require modification to the underlying components of a model, changes to fix broken file paths, or modifications due to the differences between original design purpose and the intended purpose in HEC-WAT.

Our general advice is that models should be used to conduct the analysis required to support the decision in question. A clear understanding of the decision, and what metrics are used to support decision makers, is critical to properly developing the model alternatives in the various HEC applications.

Overview

This workshop will illustrate some simple mechanical adjustments to the imported models that are frequently necessary to run a deterministic simulation in an HEC-WAT model. As you work on this workshop consider other adjustments that might be beneficial to support decisions, think about your own projects and what information is necessary, at which resolution it is necessary, and how the models can be adjusted to meet those needs. Think about the tradeoff of computational complexity, accuracy, and how the information will be used by decision makers.
