Task 3: Data Acquisition Module
Review Current Status of Data
- In the Acquisition module, zoom out to the watershed extents. (One way is to go to View > Zoom to All)
- Then using the Layers selector at the bottom left, turn on three time series icon layers: Reservoir, Flow, and Stage.
- Select the option for Relative to Current Time and the Look Back Time to 7 days.
- The time series icons that are now being displayed are called Quality Color Bars. They are meant to quickly show you where data exists for the set time window and what kind of data quality designation it has. In your district office watersheds, these time series icons will typically be linked to datasets from your CWMS database. However, for this watershed the icons are linked to a HEC-DSS file on your computer (C:/CWMS_Class/database).
- Right now you are probably seeing all gray Quality Color Bars. Gray indicates there is no data for the given time window. To see what the other colors indicate, right-click one of the time series icons and select Icon Legend.
Run Script to Acquire Data
Since there is missing data (indicated by the black or gray color bars), you will run a script to acquire data.
- Still in the Acquisition Module, select the 1-USGS script from the Scripts tab. A dialog will ask you how many days back you want to retrieve, enter 7 (you will need an internet connection to run the script).
- This script scrapes the USGS webpages of Russian River gages for stage, flow, and precipitation data. The data is then stored in an HEC-DSS file located at C:\CWMS_Class\database.
- Click OK once complete.
- Once the script has run successfully, you will notice the Quality Color Bars for the time series icons update to reflect the new data you just acquired. If you do not see the icons update, you can click the Refresh button in the left pane.
Configuration of Time Series Icons
Next you will learn how Time Series Icons are configured.
- Switch to the Setup Module.
- Right-click on any Time Series Icon and select Edit.
- In the Time Series Icon Editor dialog, select Hacienda Bridge from the drop-down list at the top of the window.
- The General tab is where you configure data to display. The Source column will show the HEC-DSS file or the CWMS database that the data is coming from. The Data Set Name column is the HEC-DSS pathname or the time series identifier for the particular data set.
- Click the Icon Types and Layers tab. You will see the type of time series icon displayed in each module and the icon layer(s) the datasets are associated with.
- The last two tabs allow you to set up the time series icon to open files on your computer (such as a water control manual), launch websites from URLs, or run scripts.
